Yes, the Muranese artist were capable of producing very high quality paperweights like the one seen here, though they are very rare. Most of Muranese paperweight production, it would seem, was aimed toward the tourist trade or for export to be sold in the gift trade, but every now and then very high quality paperweights were produced. This millefiori design is based on a classical era design called a chequer design - each millefiori cane section is framed by short sections of white latticinio. This example goes one step further with an encapsulated blue over white double overlay with 5+1 faceting. It truly is one of finest Murano paperweights that I have ever had the pleasure of handling.
