Marcus Barnes is a relatively new artist who has recently been studying under Paul Stankard at Salem Community College. Marcus has a vision like non other. He has really begun to push the limits of borosilicate glass, a medium rarely seen in paperweights, and creating sculpture and style never before seen in the art of the paperweight. Utilizing techniques that are not possible in soft glass Marcus is able to create lacy floral bouquet, featuring a color palette that is both exotic and refreshing. The color in his bouquet series is achieved through a process called 'fuming' - a technique where gold or silver, in this case gold, is burned at the flame allowing the fumes to be absorbed by the molten glass - the effects are dazzling. We are pleased to his work and look forward to seeing his gift of glass making reach its full potential. Marcus is a young talent, one to keep an eye on, I am sure that his future in the glass world is bright!
