While most paperweight historians and collectors agree that some of the most beautiful and celebrated paperweights ever made were made in Europe, the American makers, too made paperweights of interest and of equal beauty and skill. The NEGC mushroom is one such example. For this design there is no European sister - this is a wholly American design and very rare as well. In fact only about six examples of this paperweight are known to exist. The unusual design features a typical NEGC nosegay set at the center near the crown of the weight but what makes it import is the mushroom which frames the bouquet. Looking down from above, one will observe that the nosegay hovers over a portal which extends clear to the base. The concentric rings of complex millefiori erupt from the base creating this wonderful mushroom with porthole center - a design which must have turned heads and which must have struck those who first laid eyes on it speechless!
